The McMaster Marauders whipped the Mohawk Mountaineers 99-63 in exhibition men’s basketball at Mac’s Burridge Gymnasium Tuesday October 11.
Victor Raso led all scorers, pacing the Marauders with 26 points. Cam Michaud added 14.
For the Mountaineers, Andrew Cicuttini had 13 points, while former Mac player Aminu Bello scored 11 and Manny Campbell added 10.
Mohawk coach Brian Jonker said McMaster’s not only good, but so much stronger. “They definitely spend way more time in the weight room than we do at our level, said Jonker. “But in general I’d like to think we’re not 30-40 points worse than them. We didn’t make anything. We didn’t make a three. And even inside we missed 15-20 bunnies.”
The statistics bear all of that out. Mohawk shot only 30 percent from the floor for the game. They were 0-for-12 from beyond the arc and only 52.5 percent from the free throw line.
McMaster was only 39.8 percent from the floor, but made five 3-pointers and were 78.6 percent on their foul shots.
Jonker said Mountaineer stats showed Mohawk out-rebounded McMaster, although the official game sheet had Mac with a 49-43 edge. Regardless, it was a good battle under the glass and Mohawk’s Taylor Dowhaniuk matched McMaster’s Nathan McCarthy’s 12 rebounds. Dowhaniuk led everyone with 10 defensive boards.
“The final score was disappointing, said the coach, “but we can take alot from the game. Our guys don’t get down. They just keep playing. We’ve got no issues that way. They pick each other up. I think in the long run we’re going to be just fine.”
