Mohawk comes up short at Georgian College invitational

Mohawk had a good start at this weekend’s invitational women’s basketball tournament hosted by Georgian College in Barrie, but then came up short finishing the tournament with a 1-2 record.

On Friday, the Mountaineers downed John Abbott College Islanders of Montreal with a final score of 75-70. Rachelle Abella led the Mountaineers with 24 points. Marina Ciannavei had 16 points and Cynthia Mosca added 12. Mohawk head coach Kevin Duffy called the result “A great character win for the ladies.”

First up on Saturday was the Algoma University Thunderbirds of Sault Ste. Marie; the Thunderbirds prevailed with a 69-64 win. Rachelle Abella led the Mountaineers with 30 points. Megan Campbell scored 11 points and Cynthia Mosca had nine. The Mountaineers then lost another close match to Trois-Rivieres, 48-40, to complete their play in the tournament. Rachelle Abella had 11 points and Marina Ciannavei added 10 for Mohawk.

Rachelle Abella scored 65 points in the three games.
