Mohawk volleyball fall short at Wannamaker tournament

After losing to Humber and then beating Loyalist Saturday Morning (Oct. 15), Mohawk College advanced to the playoffs in the Fred Wannamaker Invitational Women’s Volleyball Tournament at Sheridan College in Oakville.

Mohawk finished third in its pool and beat Cambrian, the second place team in the other pool, in the crossover match. The scores were 25-13, 10-25, 15-10. Coach Andrew Nicholson said Jenna Gignac and Kristie Crnc had a great offensive match and first year setter Megan Bros made superb decisions.

The victory put the Mountaineers into the semi-finals against Humber for what the coach called his team’s best match of the pre-season. Mohawk won the first set 25-23, but dropped the next two, 13-25, 10-15. Nicholson said the squad played exceptional defense, led by the Middle Blocker duo of Kristin VanHartingsveldt and Chi Chi Chuks Mady and Libero Julie Gagnon.

That sent Mohawk to the third place match against Seneca where they lost 19-25, 25-23, 11-15.

Nicholson used support players in this match and praised the energy and effort from Liz Pollock and Mel Patenaude.

Otherwise, the coach said, “This tournament was the first one that we used our true first string and they proved that they can compete with the best in the OCAA.”
