The Hamilton Bulldogs struck first but in the end the Abbotsford Heat were on the top side of a 3-2 overtime result in American Hockey League play at Copps Coliseum on Tuesday night (Nov. 1). Joe Piskula scored the Heat’s game-winning goal at 3:59 of the extra period to send 2,003 fans home disappointed.
Philippe Lefebvre got Hamilton’s opening goal at 17:19 of the first period. Aaron Palushaj passed the puck from the left wing to Brian Willsie in the slot. His shot was stopped by goaltender Leland Irving but the rebound came to Lefebvre who slid the puck into the net.
The Heat tied the score just over three minutes into the sandwich period. Greg Nemisz took a pass from Quintin Laing and skated from the slot to the right circle before shooting over the blocker of goaltender Robert Mayer. Abbotsford took the lead at 17:37 of the period while on a power play. Jon Rheault relayed a pass from Guillaume Desbiens into the net.
The ‘Dogs tied the game at 5:00 of the third stanza on a power play goal by Olivier Fortier. Palushaj circled from right to left around the net and feathered a pass from the left circle to Fortier who was at the right circle and one-timed the puck into the net.
Piskula ended the contest after firing a shot over the glove of Mayer.
Hamilton was outshot, 35-26, in the contest.
The Bulldogs will continue their homestand when they face the Houston Aeros on Friday, Nov. 4tat 7:30 p.m. The following night the Lake Erie Monsters visit Copps for a 7 p.m. game.
