The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association volleyball season opened at Mohawk’s Fennell Gym on Saturday (Nov. 5) and the Mountaineer men swept St. Clair 3-0, but the Mohawk women dropped three straight to the Saints.
Justin Scapinello led the Mohawk men to a 25-15, 25-21, 25-14 victory with seven kills, three stuff blocks and two service aces. Mo Sulaiman collected eight kills and Ian Cameron had four kills, two blocks and one ace.
For St. Clair, Michael Vandersleen had nine kills and one block, while Josh Lynch contributed two kills, one block and five aces.
In the women’s match, Mohawk will feel it should have taken two sets, but instead lost 16-25, 24-26, 26-28 to the Saints. Jenna Gignac had seven kills, one block and one ace to lead the Mountaineers. Kristen VanHartingsveldt had six kills and two aces and Chi Chi Chuks-Mady had six kills, one block and one ace.
For St. Clair, Deanna Harris was the top gun with eight kills, two blocks and four aces, while Kate Zawyrucha came up with 10 kills, two blocks and one ace and Alee Brecka added 10 kills and two aces.
