Marauder Farrell’s foot finds favour

McMaster Marauders Paterson Farrell has kicked himself to a Pioneer Energy Ontario University Athletics Athlete of the Week award.

Farrell was named the male athlete of the week, for the period ending Nov. 5, after the second-year forward scored two important goals in the OUA men’s soccer championship game to help the Marauders earn their fifth championship banner in school history.

The Oakville native scored his first against the Toronto Varsity Blues in the 20th minute to open up the scoring. Farrell then added his second goal in injury time to solidify the win for McMaster. The Marauders and Toronto Varsity Blues will represent OUA at the CIS men’s soccer championship in Victoria, B.C. from Nov. 10-13.

The Pioneer female athlete of the week is Chantal Marson of Queen’s.

Marson (London, Ont.) backstopped the Gaels to their first OUA soccer championship title in nine seasons in stellar fashion. The fifth-year goalkeeper started all three playoff games for the Gaels against Carleton, McMaster and Laurier and recorded three clean sheets in the process, as the Gaels didn’t allow any goals in regulation or overtime. With both teams at stalemate, the final decision came down to penalty kicks. Marson’s single save proved to be significant as the Gaels edged the Golden Hawks 5-4, securing a 1-0 victory. The Gaels advanced to the CIS championship in Montreal, along with the Laurier Golden Hawks and Ottawa Gee-Gees, from Nov. 10-13.
