Olympic hopefuls tackle Welland flatwater centre

This weekend (Nov. 11-13) the Welland International Flatwater Centre will host the 2011 RBC National Rowing Championships. Hundreds of athletes – including rowing’s Olympic hopefuls – will descend on the centre during the three-day regatta.

This year marks the second year that RBC is title sponsor of the regatta. Last year, Victoria, B.C.’s local branches got behind this annual event.

The 2011 RBC National Rowing Championships is a small boat regatta. Competitors race in the single or pair boats – racing in small boats is an excellent way for coaches to assess the athletes’ speed and skill.

“The WIFC always does an excellent job hosting rowing events, and we are certainly excited to have the local RBC branches onboard and applaud their ongoing support of sport,” said Donna Atkinson, Rowing Canada Aviron Executive Director.

In addition to the support of local RBC branches, the regatta awards prize money to the medal winners in certain categories. This funding, made possible through a $20,000 private donation, provides much needed training and development support to the top athletes.

NRC finals will be held on Sunday, Nov. 13, followed by medal presentations.

“RBC is thrilled to be supporting the National Rowing Championships regatta,” said Doug Bugler, regional vice president for Niagara, RBC. “We have a long, proud history of supporting Olympic athletes and the National Rowing Championships represent our core values of excellence, teamwork and diversity
