It may have been a foregone conclusion that this week’s Ontario University Athletics football players of the week would be McMaster Marauder: The Marauders are the lone OUA team remaining in post-season collegiate playoffs. And for their 45-21 dismantling of the Acadia Axeman in the Uteck Bowl, which gave the Marauders a ticket to the national final – the Vanier Cup – a trio of Mac players were rightfully recognized.
Offensive honours went to receiver Brad Fochesato.
The fourth-year player caught a pass from quarterback Kyle Quinlan for a 75-yard pass-and-run play in the second quarter, mounting McMaster’s comeback win over the Axemen. The Windsor, Ont. native caught five passes at the Uteck Bowl for 159 yards and connected with Quinlan for another touchdown later in that same quarter.
On defence, Ben D’Aguilar grabs the spotlight.
The ssecond-year linebacker came up big for the Marauders. D’Aguilar, a Hamilton native, recorded three solo tackles, two of those coming from sacks of Acadia’s quarterback Kyle Graves for a total of 14 yards. He also recorded a forced fumble in Mac’s win.
Spencer Moore, a wide receiver, showed his versatility in being named special team’s player of the week.
A rookie, Moore was key to the Marauders’ punt coverage. The Hamilton native’s presence on the field during punts kept Acadia’s return to a minimum helping the Marauders earn a spot at the Vanier Cup for the first time since 1967.
McMaster meets Laval University Rouge et Or on Friday (Nov.25) at 6 p.m. (Pacific time) at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. The game will be broadcast live on TSN and RDS.
