Whitmore alone scored more goals than the entire Bulldogs did on Saturday (Nov. 26) and the result was a 5-3 Rochester Americans victory over Hamilton. The defeat was Hamilton’s fifth straight in the American Hockey League. Maxime Legault had the other Amerks goal.
For Hamilton, Joe Callahan with a goal and an assist, Alex Henry, and Dany Masse provided the offence.
Rochester had built a 3-0 lead before the game was 10 minutes old.
The Americans opened the scoring on an unassisted goal by Whitmore a mere 32 seconds into the game. Bulldogs goaltender Robert Mayer came out of the net to play the puck but missed and Whitmore knocked it into the open net.
Just over a minute later, Whitmore struck again. After coming in on a one-on-three rush, Whitmore had his stick lifted but was able to get the puck back and snap a shot through the legs of Mayer. The Americans scored another goal at 7:57 of the first stanza on a goal by Legault. Riley Boychuk’s shot was stopped by Mayer and the rebound came to Legault who put the puck into the net.
The Bulldogs picked up their first tally at 12:38 of the first period on Henry’s marker. Joonas Nattinen’s shot was stopped by goaltender David Leggio. The rebound came to Henry and he slid the puck past Leggio. The ‘Dogs added another goal at 18:35 of the opening frame on a five-on-three goal by Masse. After receiving a pass from Callahan, Masse snapped a shot through the legs of Leggio.
Hamilton tied the score at 14:01 of the middle frame on a goal by Callahan. After receiving the puck from Philip DeSimone, Callahan took a hard shot from the right point which flew past Leggio.
Each team had 34 shots on net before a crowd of 5,016.
Rochester’s fourth goal came via Whitmore. Marcus Foligno took a shot which was stopped by Mayer and the rebound came out to Whitmore who buried the puck past Mayer. The Amerks pulled ahead by two on Whitmore’s fourth effort.
