DUNDAS – Don Robertson closed the door on the Dundas Real McCoys.
No, the general manager did not fire the coaching staff, trade all the players, or dissolve the franchise. He blasted the players after they were Blast-ed by Walter Easter’s second goal that gave Brantford a 6-5 overtime victory over Dundas Real McCoys in Allan Cup Hockey League action on Friday night (Nov. 25) in the JL Grightmire Arena.
In addition to Easter, Chad Spurr scored twice with Mike Roberto and Jon Jankus adding single goals for the Blast. Matt Smith, with two, David Volpe, Cam Watson, and Darryl Smith replied for the McCoys.
Brantford maintained possession of second spot in Allan Cup Hockey with seven wins, three losses and a shootout loss, good enough for 15 points. The defeat left the Real McCoys in the basement of the Senior league with seven points from a win, four losses, three overtime losses, and two shootout losses.
Whitby Dunlops top the five-teal league with 22 points, followed by Brantford, Norwood (nine points), Orillia (eight points) and Dundas.
Friday night (Dec. 2), the McCoys, welcome the Norwood Vipers to the Grightmire Arena for a 7:45 p.m. tilt. That night also marks the beginning of the annual Dundas Real McCoys-Salvation Army Food Drive.
“We’re not that unhappy with our talent level, but we can’t seem to get two points when we need them, and playing once a week hasn’t done us any favours,” Robertson.
“I haven’t had a closed door meeting with only the players in years, but Friday we had a chat…at least I did. I certainly can’t say what was said, but let’s say that we all have a clear understanding of what is expected of each other.
“We have provided a well-respected winning tradition for our loyal fans, and our community. They respect that, and we will put out a great effort this Friday, for a full 60 minutes, and if we don’t I’ll make the changes required for this club to win again for our fans.”
Dundas started well with leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before Brantford rebounded to tie the score at 2-2 at 8:27 of the first period. The Blast then took the lead on a tic-tac-toe passing play on a powerplay as Spurr connected at 15:10.
In the second period, the McCoys outscored Brantford 3-2 to lead 5-4 after 40 minutes. Spurr opened the scoring with his second goal as he slid the puck between the legs of Bryan Worosz while the latter was dropping to the ice. Darryl Smith tied the score for Dundas on a powerplay when he slapped the puck past goalie Brett Leggat at 8:18.
Mike Smith with his second put Dundas back in front at 9:09 as he golfed a rebound past Leggat from the side of the net. The Blast rallied again to tie the score for a third time as Easter connected on a powerplay at 19:06 to send the game into OT.
