Mohawk closes second place gap in men’s volleyball

The Mohawk Mountaineers made it three straight wins with a 26-24, 25-16, 25-16 sweep of the Redeemer Royals in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Men’s West Region volleyball on Wednesday (Nov. 30) at the Fennell Gym.

Justin Scapinello had 10 kills, five service aces and three stuff blocks for the Mountaineers. Ian Cameron had 11 kills and one block. Phil Youngblut scored seven kills and three blocks. Ryan dela Rosa had another strong defensive game from his Libero position with 16 digs.

For Redeemer, which saw its record even off at 4-4, Dave Klomps scored six kills, two aces and one block. Aaron Vander Lugt had six kills and one block and Derek Vandenbrink had seven digs.

Mohawk head coach Matt Schnarr said the win against the city rivals felt pretty good.

“(It was) a very important match which separates us from them by two matches which is good come the second half of the season,” said Schnarr, who noted it gets his side into third place (at 5-2), just two points back of second place Humber (6-1) going into a big showdown with the Hawks Saturday afternoon in Etobicoke.

Schnarr admitted keeping his team focused on the Redeemer match and not looking forward to Humber was a test. But the team executed well after the first set and made it look easy.

The Mountaineers’ defense excelled.

“We had 10 blocks as a team,” said Schnarr. “And if we can block like that and take shots away that our opponents are strong at, our defense, as long as they’re in the right spot, will dig it. So defensively, we are playing real good ball and we’re going to need that, come the end of the year.”
