The St. John’s IceCaps froze the Hamilton Bulldogs, 4-0, on Friday (Dec. 2) in American Hockey League play. It was Hamilton’s sixth straight loss.
The IceCaps struck early at Copps Coliseum, scoring just 73 seconds into the game. Spencer Machacek deflected a shot off a Bulldogs’ skate and past goaltender Nathan Lawson for what would be the winning goal.
With 3:31 left in the opening period, Aaron Gagnon took a swing at the puck following a skirmish in front of the Hamilton net and gave the IceCaps a two goal lead while on a power play.
The Bulldogs had a few chances in the second period, but St. John’s goaltender David Aebischer played a strong game with a little help from his posts. The IceCaps took a 3-0 lead midway in the second, when Eric O’Dell’s hard shot from the hash-marks sailed past Lawson.
Machacek’s backhand shot earned him his second goal of the game at 5:54 in the third period.
The IceCaps lead the Eastern Conference with 30 points while the Bulldogs are in last place in the Western Conference.
Hamilton was outshot 39-21 before a crowd of 4,176.
The Bulldogs continue their home stand on Saturday (Dec. 3) at 7 p.m. when they face the Rochester Americans at Copps.
