The Mohawk Mountaineers woman’s basketball team has added a new assistant coach – Kevin Karl, an experienced basketball man in the community.
It’s a return to Mohawk for Karl, as he coached the men’s and women’s Ontario Colleges Athletic Association varsity volleyball teams from 1987-90.
Karl has coached soccer, baseball, football and track and field as well as basketball and volleyball at the club, high school, and elementary school levels over the past 30 years. He instructed at Joe Raso’s summer basketball camps for 10 years.
Karl won the 1992 Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations’ gold medal and 1993 OFSAA consolation honours with his St. Mary’s High School girls basketball squad.
He guided the Cathedral senior boys to OFSAA silver and bronze medals in 1997 and ’98 respectively. At Blessed Sacrament of the Ontario Basketball Association, he won the AAA gold medal in 2006 and 2007 to go with two silvers and two bronzes in other years. In 2006-07 the Karl-led side became the first Canadian team to ever play in the American Athletic Union National Championships in the United States.
He currently teaches at St. Jean de Brebeuf High School on Hamilton Mountain.
Mohawk head coach Kevin Duffy said, “I work with an outstanding crew of co-coaches already and any time you can complement that by bringing in another experienced coach will only make our team better in the long run. Coach Karl has great knowledge and enthusiasm for the game. We are happy to have him along as we move forward into the second half of the season.”
