Falasca’s four goals not enough for Warriors

Despite a four-goal effort from Myles Falasca, the Stoney Creek Warriors dropped a 7-5 Golden Horseshoe Conference junior B hockey game to the Welland Canadians on Sunday (Jan. 15).

The scoring in the first period was fast and furious. Stoney Creek opened the scoring at 6:04 courtesy of Tyler VanKleef, who lit the lamp thanks to the quick sticks of Joseph Monticchio and Falasca. The hats would come off for Stoney Creek as the next three goals came from Falasca. The trio of goals put the Warriors in a commanding lead 4-0 late in the period. The barrage of goals was Falasca’s second hat trick of the season.

Welland got one back before the end of the first period as Mike Marquis found the back of the net at 17:11.

The second period saw Welland get back into the game. Mike Marquis scored his second goal of the game at 8:34 followed by Matt Vizzari just over a minute later to cut the Warriors lead to one goal. Falasca would score his fourth goal of the game moments later to extend the Warriors lead back to two goals with assists by Mike Casale and Monticchio.

This is where the wheels came off the bus.

Welland would score four unanswered goals in the final 25 minutes, including Mike Marquis who scored his own hat trick for the Canadians. The onslaught of goals was enough to push Welland into the lead and the eventual victory.

The loss adds two points to Welland’s lead on Stoney Creek in the standings. The Warriors will travel to Port Colborne to take on the Pirates. In their last encounter, Stoney Creek lost in a shoot out.
