Women Mountaineers rise to occasion in volleyball

The Mohawk Mountaineers women’s volleyball team isn’t about to give up the ghost in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play.

Going into Wednesday’s (Jan. 18) contest against the West Region’s fifth-place Knights in Niagara, the eighth-place Mountaineers knew their season was on the line. And in response they came back from two sets down to surprised the Knights, 18-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-10.

With seven games remaining in regular season play the Mountaineers improved to 3-8 while the Knights dropped to 5-6.

Humber leads the 10-team pack with a perfect 11-0 record.

Jenna Gignac had 10 kills, two service aces, one stuff block and 16 digs to lead Mohawk to its win. Mackenzie Lawrence recorded seven kills, two aces and 18 digs, while Julie Gagnon had 23 digs.

Jenna Bray led Niagara with 18 offensive points.

Sheridan Bruins will bring their 5-6 record to the Mohawk gym on Saturday (Jan.21) for a 4 p.m. game.
