Marauders dispose of stubborn Gryphons

The McMaster men’s basketball team over came a 10-point deficit in the third quarter to score an 82-74 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Wednesday (Jan. 25) McMaster’s Big Mac Player of the Game was Adam Presuitt, who scored 27 points in the win.

Mac’s first quarter lead of 21-20 quickly disappeared in the second period and the half would end 43-35 in favour of the Gryphons.

The first double digit lead of the game occurred near the beginning of the third with the Gryphons up 47-37 but the Marauders came alive with baskets from Victor Raso and Nathan Pelech. Mac put up an 8-0 run as foul shots got the Marauders within three. The quarter ended with the Marauders down by just two points, 53-51.

In the fourth, Presutti tied it at 53-all and another basket from the rookie would put McMaster up by two. The Marauders increased their lead to 60-54 but a stubborn Gryphons team fought back to again tie the game, 63-63, but the Marauders rallied for the win. McMaster remains in fourth place in the West Division with a 10-5 record while Guelph is tied for sixth place with Brock with 8-7 records. The Marauders are the third highest scoring team in the division.

In addition to Presutti offence, fellow rookie Joe Rocca recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds and 10 points and Taylor Black added another 16 for the Marauders.

For the Gryphons, Kareen Malcolm was the Big Mac Player of the Game for his game-high 27 points. Also hitting double-digit numbers for Guelph was Dan McCarthy with 15 points and Michel Clark with 11. Adam Bering recorded nine points and 12 rebounds.

The Marauders take on the Waterloo Warriors on the road on Saturday afternoon.
