Mountaineers have tough climb beating Royals

Mohawk Mountaineers were pushed to the limit on Tuesday (Jan. 24), escaping from the Redeemer Royals with a 3-2 set win in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association men’s volleyball.

Mohawk jumped to an early two set lead, 25-19, 25-17, before the Royals grabbed the momentum and, backed by a crowd of about 400 fans, took the third and fourth games, 25-23, 25-22, to tie it up at 2-2.

In what seemed like a playoff type atmosphere, both teams battled right to the end, as extra points were needed. The Royals had two match points but couldn’t convert as Mohawk seized the opportunity when they went up 17-16 with one more point and the 18-16 win. Pacing the Royals were Dave Klomps with a game high 17 kills and 19 total points, while Derek Vandenbrink led the team in defense with a game high 11 digs. Aaron Tolkamp led both teams with three serving aces.

Redeemer sits in sixth place in the West Division but is tied in points with fifth-place Sheridan which has a game in hand. Seventh place Niagara is eight points back.

Mohawk is in third place with a 10-3 record.

The Royals play in London against fourth-place Fanshawe on Friday (Jan. 27). Mohawk travels to Windsor to play St. Clair on Friday
