The Philippine Basketball Association, started in 1990, kicked off a new season on January 22, with 20 teams in several age categories.
The league, which is directed towards the Filipino-Canadian community and individuals living in the Hamilton and surrounding areas, plays every Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. and wrapping up around 8 p.m. All games are played at Hill Park Secondary School on East 16th Street.
Players compete in both house and rep leagues beginning with a co-ed youth program for those 10 years and older. The next age group is the men’s open (16 years and older), followed by the senior division (30 and over) and then the master’s for those 45 years and over.
The winter league completes until April and in addition to its in-house schedules also sends teams to invitational tournaments or exhibition games outside of Hamilton, organized by other Filipino-Canadian basketball leagues in Toronto, Mississauga, and Brantford for example, as well as the yearly Philippine Intercity Basketball tournament of North America.
