Waterloo – Sarah Taylor and Alex VanOmmen were double gold medal winners for McMaster at a Wilfrid Laurier University swim meet on Sunday (Jan. 29). McMaster swimmers returned home with 10 gold medals and 15 in total in advance of next weekend’s Ontario University Athletics championships.
Taylor won her gold medals in the 50 back and the 100 fly. Her time in the 50 was a quick 30.68 and in the 100 fly, Taylor finished it in 1:04:03. VanOmmen turned her strokes to gold in the 200 breast, with a time of 2:40.19, and in the 50 breast at 33.83. Taylor won another medal in the 50 fly, finishing second.
Other notable finishes for the women’s team included a silver medal from Linda Chow in the 50 free, Meg Sloan earned silver in the 100 free and Erin MacFadyen had a second place finish in the 100 breast. Also winning a silver were Lynnaea Mulligan in the 100 fly and Louisa Yee Wai Chan’s in the 200 IM.
Jeff Braches was a gold medal winner in the 50 free for the Marauders with a time of 24.15. Ben Stubbs won the 50 back at 28.84 and Konrad Bald won the 50 breast at 29.23. Ian Bletcha won gold in the 200 breast with a time of 2:41.86 and teammate Matthew Vogelzang won the 50 fly with a time of 25.44. Cam Bailey finished first in the 400 IM at a time of 4:29.69.
Silver medals on the men’s side included Michael MacDonald in the 50 and 100 frees, Kieran Liew in the 50 and 100 back, and Braches in the 100 back. Bailey took second in the 50 breast and Bletcha finished with the same result in the 100 breast. Vogelzang and Stubbs also finished second in the 100 fly and the 400 IM, respectively.
The Marauders head to Sudbury next week to compete at the OUA championships at Laurentian University from Feb. 9-11.
