Waterloo – The McMaster women’s rugby team won the inaugural Waterloo Indoor 7’s Cup tournament.
The morning started with a bang with a win against York, 40-5. Kim Ngai set the bar high with three tries. Emily Ricketts contributed two and Georgia Davis, Cindy Nelles, and Hannah Braithwaite each contributed a try for the win.
Up next was a tough Waterloo 1 team. Ngai continued to lead the Mac team with three tries, Christine Van Beest put up two, and Nelles ran in one for a 30-20 win against the host team.
In the last game of round robin play, the Marauders were up against a quick Western 2 team. The women dug deep and worked together to beat the Western squad, 25-10. Nelles had two tries with Marisa Ashley, Braithwaite, and Ricketts contributing a try each.
Finishing on top of the pool with a 3-0 record, McMaster met Western’s other entry in the final. With several top Ontario University Athletics and Canadian Interuniversity Sports players, Western 1 was looking to be a challenge for the Mac squad. The Marauders turned it on with an aggressive offense and shut out Western with a strong, cohesive defense. Varsha Tripathi dominated with three tries, Nelles with two, and Ngai put in another for a 30-0 win in the final.
