Marauders Badger-ed by Brock in women’s basketball

McMaster Marauders, who forced overtime with a buzzer beater basket, lost a 73-64 Ontario University Athletics women’s basketball game to the Brock Badgers on Wednesday (Feb. 1).

McMaster sent the game into the five-minute extra time session when team captain Taylor Chiarot made a layup from an inbounding play as the buzzer ended regulation time and the score tied at 58 apiece.

With the loss, McMaster remains in fourth place in the OUA’s West division with a 9-8 record. Brock holds down the second spot with a 12-6 performance.

The Badgers held a 17-13 lead to start the second quarter but the first half would end in a 31-31 stalemate.

Most of the third quarter would see little offence with the Badgers taking a five-point lead early in at 36-31. But two foul shots from Vanessa Bonomo would put the Marauders within three. With two minutes to go, the scoring would open up from both teams, with McMaster tying it up at 40 with a three-pointer from point guard Bonomo. A lay-up to follow that from forward Hailey Milligan would put McMaster ahead for the first time since the end of the second and the home team would earn the four-point lead, 47-43, going into the final quarter.

With three minutes left in the game, the Marauders had built a four-point lead, 53-49.

Marauders led by one with 10 seconds on the clock but the Badgers would pull out a three-pointer to stop the clock at 2.1 seconds left to play with a 58-56 advantage. Seeming that there was no hope left, the Marauders wouldn’t go down without a fight. Devising an inbounding plan to tie it up, Chiarot made a lay-up at the buzzer to send the game into an extra five minutes.

Overtime would see both teams foul, and with bonus in affect, the Badgers would connect with their foul shots and shut down the Marauders offence to take a large lead. The Marauders were ineffective in overtime, in part due to Milligan fouling out with four minutes to go.

Bonomo was McMaster’s high scorer with 15 points on the night. Milligan was named the Big Mac Player of the Game for her 12 points and eight rebounds and Chiarot also added 12 points for the Marauders. She was the only Marauder to record the double-double as she grabbed 10 rebounds as well.

For the Badgers, Nicole Rosenkranz was the game-high scorer with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Emily MacKay had 14 points, Andrea Polischuk added 11 more for Brock and Samantha deJong grabbed 10 rebounds and scored another six points.

The Marauders take on the Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
