MVC take silver at McGregor Cup

The Mountain Volleyball Club’s 16U girls team, which moved up a competitive division, won the Silver medal at the Ontario Volleyball Association 16U McGregor Cup – Championship Central held in Kitchener recently.

Going into the tournament the MVC squad was seeded ninth and finished second in pool play. MVC opened tournament play losing Leaside Lightning Red, 15-25, 23-25, and then defeated the Barrie Elites Black, 25-18, 25-18.

In the quarter finals, MVC defeated the Halton Hurricanes Blue, 25-16, 25-11 In the semifinals where they defeated the Mississauga Pakmen, 25-22, 20-25, 15-11, to advance to the Gold medal match.

In a hard fought hard tilt, MVC lost to Leaside Lightning Red, 26-28, 22-25, for the Silver medal.

The coaches are Steve Bonazza and Ben Goerzen of St. Catharines.

Players include: Hayley Genovy, Stoney Creek, Madison Lenders, Stoney Creek; Kiana Mammolite, Stoney Creek; Victoria Golebiowski, Glanbrook; Brianna Latard, Burlington; Jenna Mazza-Anthony, Stoney Creek; Savannah Browne, Hamilton; Katiana Pare, Hamilton; Chelsea McShane, Niagara-on-the-Lake; Erin Harper, St. Catharines; Libby Donevan, St. Catharines; and Kinsley Child, St. Catharines.

In their previous tournament, the team won the Gold medal.
