GRAND RAPIDS – The Grand Rapids Griffins flew to a 5-2 victory, beating Hamilton in the second of back-to-back away games for the Bulldogs at Van Andel Arena.
Gustav Nyquist notched two goals while Fabian Brunnstrom, Brendan Smith and Tomas Tatar each added two points for the victors in the American Hockey League meeting.
The Griffins opened the scoring at 8:27 of the second stanza on a one-timed shot by Francis Pare that beat goaltender Nathan Lawson. Just 22 seconds later, Dany Masse snapped a shot past Grand Rapids netminder Jordan Pearce.
Grand Rapids took the lead at 17:04 of the middle frame on a hard power play slap shot by Nyquist. The ‘Dogs were again quick to respond, tying the game only 31 seconds later on a tally by Andreas Engqvist.
The Griffins made it 3-2 at 4:53 of the third period when Brunnstrom slapped the puck into the top corner of the net. Grand Rapids doubled the lead at 9:41 of the third frame on Nyquist’s second of the game. The Griffins added another marker 33 seconds later when Trevor Parkes made a perfect pass to Mitch Callahan for a 5-2 final score.
Grand Rapids held a slim 35-34 edge in shots on goal. Lawson was replaced by Robert Mayer for the last 10 minutes of the game.
The Bulldogs face the San Antonio Rampage for the second of two school day games on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Copps Coliseum.
