Smashing success in volleyball


Two girls teams representing the Hamilton Smash Volleyball Club were silver medalists at recent Ontario Volleyball Association tournaments.

In Under-13 McGregor’s Cup play in Kitchener the Smash advanced to the final with an undefeated record in preliminary play. The Smash team finished first in its pool, taming the Waterloo Tigers, 3-0 and silencing the Sarnia Thunder, 3-0, in sets.

In quarter-final action, the young girls beat the Kitchener-Waterloo Predators, 2-0, to advance to the semi-finals where they took the sting from the Hespeler Scorpions Cubs, 2-0, to reach the final.

In the finals, after 10 straight wins, the Smash suffered its first loss of the day at the hands of the top ranked team in the province, Forest City Blues from London. London claimed the gold medal with its two sets sweep.

Members of the silver medal Smash Team include coaches Mark Wu and Norm Scime and players Aniyah Dwyer, Sara Masri , Emily Scime, Jessica De Forest, Kristina Wu, Sabrina Cianciosi, Carly Wong, Juliana Marfisi and Natalie Clark.

Not to be outdone, the Smash’s 18U girls started the year off with a bang, taking home a silver medal from the recent OVA Championship West Challenge Cup.

Hamilton trumped the Toronto Aces in two sets to open the tournament. Following this match, the Smash beat the Dufferin-Peel ACTS Elite in three sets to finish first in pool play.

During the quarter finals the girls defeated the Waterloo Tigers Black in straight sets and then it was on to the semi-finals where the girls cooled off the Sudbury Northern Chill team to advance to the final.
