MVC team steps up to Gold

MVC 16U were Gold Medallists at the 17-Under Girls McGregor Cup Division tournament

Mountain Volleyball Club girls teams won a Gold and a Bronze medal and finished fifth at tournaments held across the province on the weekend (Feb. 4-5)

At the 17-Under Girls McGregor Cup Trillium Division tournament held in Baden, the eighth seeded Mountain Volleyball Club 16U team played up an age category and won its second Gold medal of the season.

In pool play, MVC 16U defeated the Guelph Grizzlies, 25-15, 25-12; split with the Halton Hurricanes Black 16U, 26-24, 24-26, and defeated the Waterloo Tigers Black 16U, 25-15, 25-12.

In the quarter finals against the Niagara Rapids, MVC won in straight sets, 25-14, 25-19, and repeated in the semifinals against Waterloo Tigers Black 16U, 25-16, 25-15.

In the Championship match against the Oakville Thunder Blue 16U, the Hamilton team took the Gold medal with the scores of 27-25, 25-19.

The MVC 16U coaches are Steve Bonazza and Ben Goerzen of St. Catharines. Players include: Hayley Genovy, Stoney Creek; Madison Lenders, Stoney Creek; Jenna Mazza-Anthony, Stoney Creek; Kiana Mammolite, Hamilton; Victoria Golebiowski, Glanbrook; Brianna Layard, Burlington; Savannah Browne, Hamilton; Katiana Pare, Hamilton; Chelsea McShane, Niagara-on-the-Lake; Erin Harper, St. Catharines; Libby Donevan, St. Catharines; Kinsley Child, St. Catharines; and Joslyn Bortolussi. St. Catharines.

For the 14U Girls, their played earned them a Bronze medal at the 14U Girls McGregor Cup Trillium D held in Thorold.

Finishing second in their pool, MVC 14U defeated the Oakville Thunder White, 13U 25-5, 25-20, and lost to the Selects, 98 15-25, 15-25.

In the quarterfinals Hamilton defeated the Halton Hurricanes Black 13U, 25–21, 25–21, to advance to the semifinal round. The Niagara Rapids defeated MVC, 25–12, 25–19, sending Hamilton to the Bronze medal game. In that match, MVC defeated the Halton Hurricanes Blue 13U, 25–14, 4–25, 15–8.

The MVC 14U team is coached by Jos Nederveen and Jerry Olejarz of Dundas, and Ashley Muir and Laurie Fernandez of Hamilton. Players include: Lilia Olejarz ,Dundas; Marta Matuzonyte, Nicole Roberge, Zoe Cleland, and Miranda Dowling, all of Ancaster; Roberta Todd and Jordan McCoy, both of Stoney Creek; Olivia Roberts, Maria McFarland, Kyanna Enisan, Maddy McDonagh, Cathryn Webb, and Nesreen Khalaf, all Hamilton.

The MVC 17U girls went into the McGregor Cup Championship West Division in Hamilton seeded sixth and finished fifth.

The squad was second after pool play, losing to the Georgetown Impact, 19-25, 15-25, and defeating the Kitchener Predators Black, 26-24, 25-23. MVC 17U were defeated by the Forest City Blue, 21-25, 16-25, in the quarter finals and recovered to defeat the Predators, 12-25, 25-20, 15-8, to take fifth overall.

Despite the loss, MVC 17U will remain in the Championship West Division.
