Olympic berth in Wishart’s sights

Kristine Wishart

Hamilton’s Kristine Wishart is off to India.

Wishart, and the Women’s and Men’s national field hockey teams, will be competing to earn tickets to the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The International Hockey Federation Olympic Qualification Tournament begins on Saturday, Feb. 18. This is the final opportunity for the two teams to earn Olympic berths.

Wishart is a 24-year-old mid-fielder who played her first international match in 2010, starred for the Guelph Gryphons during her collegiate career. In 2005 she was the Canadian Interuniversity Sports rookie of the year.

“We are feeling strong going into this qualifier,” says women’s team captain Katie Baker. “On the field, we are competitive and tough. We know what we can do as a team, and we are ready to compete together.”

Georgetown resident Noreen Ortilla is the athletic therapist for the women’s team.

“We can’t wait to get on the pitch in India,” says men’s team captain Ken Pereira. “We are ready to go and get that spot at London 2012!”
