Redeemer’s women’s doubles partners Janelle Koopmans and Katherine Harvey split their opening-day games at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association’s Badminton Championships on Friday (Feb. 17).
On Saturday (Feb. 18), Koopmans and Harvey will play Kalina Gelinas and Katie Jodouin of Boreal.
After dropping their first two matches, the pair bounced back to win the next two. Koopmans and Harvey lost to Humber’s Alyssa Woon and Renee Yip in two games, 21-8, 21-14, and fell to Seneca’s Li-Ju Chen and Carol Dela Cerna, 21-13, 21-16.
Their victories came against Lisa Tyldesley and Danica Zweep of Fanshawe, 22-20, 21-12, and Georgian’s Nicole Wilkins and Ziying Yang, 21-6, 21-7.
In women’s singles play, Katie Roth finished the day at 1-2. And her victory came over Royals teammate, Julie Koopmans, 21-9, 16-21, 21-17. Roth’s defeats were to Humber’s Tracy Wong, 21-10, 21-0, and Boryana Yankova of George Brown, 21-11, 21-7.
Koopmans lost all three of her matches. In addition to the loss to Roth, she was downed by Rebecca Trischler of Georgian, 19-21, 21-15, 21-13, and Jenna Dupuis of Boreal, 21-8, 20-22, 21-6.
Roth will play Trischler and Koopmans will meet Yankova in Saturday play.
Redeemer University College is host for the OCAA tournament.
