The Redeemer Royals team of Janelle Koopmans and Katherine Harvey won the bronze medal in women’s doubles at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association badminton championships on Saturday.
The two had advanced to the semi-final round with a two-game sweep of Kalina Gelinas and Katie Jodouin of Boreal, 21-8, 21-16. In the semi-final, Koopmans and Harvey fell victims to Seneca’s Li-Ju Chen and Carol Dela Cerna, who eventually ended up with the silver medal.
Koopmans and Harvey were awarded the bronze after beating Franshawe’s Lisa Tyldesley and Danica Zweap.
Redeemer had two competitors in the women’s singles division – Julie Koopmans and Katie Roth. Roth won her Saturday morning match in three games over Rebecca Trischler of Georgian, 16-21, 21-13, 21-13. But in her semi-final game against Humber’s Tracy Wong, she was defeated and sent to the bronze medal match. Jenna Dupuis of Boreal left her in fourth place.
Koopmans lost her Saturday morning match and was eliminated by Boryana Yankova of George Brown, 21-9, 21-16.
Gold medal winners in the divisions were: Men’s Singles – Simon Yip, Humber; Women’s Singles – Tracy Wong, Humber; Men’s Doubles – Dayvon Reid and Mark Wong, George Brown; Women’s Doubles – Alyssa Woon and Renee Yip, Humber; and Mixed Doubles – Sanjay Ashokkumar and Patricia Lau, Seneca.
