It’s only been three years since Redeemer University College Royals returned to Ontario Colleges Athletic Association badminton but the program couldn’t have asked for a better start.
After its most successful season since it was reintroduced at Redeemer in 2009-10, the Royals are being rewarded with a National Ranking.
As of Saturday, the season ended for Redeemer’s badminton players but there is still a lot to celebrate. After a successful OCAA Regional Championship, the Royals followed it up with an impressive showing at the OCAA Provincial Championships. The women’s doubles team of Janelle Koopmans and Katherine Harvey captured the bronze medal while women’s singles players Katie Roth and Julie Koopmans finished 4th and 6th respectively.
Because of the men’s and women’s 2nd place finish as a team at the Regional Championships, along with the results of the Provincial Championships, Redeemer’s badminton team is ranked as the No. 12 in Canada.
This is Redeemer’s second National Ranking of the season and the first time ever that Redeemer has had two teams ranked nationally in the same season. The Women’s Cross Country team was ranked No. 13 in October. Redeemer’s last and highest ranking before this season was during the 2009-10 season when the men’s volleyball team was ranked No. 4 in Canada.
