Mohawk meets strong opponent in volleyball showdown

The Mohawk men’s volleyball team hopes to add to its medal haul at this week’s Ontario Colleges Athletic Association championship in North Bay.

Over the past six seasons, the Mountaineers have captured two gold medals, one silver and two bronze, including a third place finish last year. The team, which qualified for this year’s championship by sweeping La Cite, had a solid regular season finishing in third place in the West Region with a 13-5 record.

After a sluggish start, the Mountaineers reeled off 10 wins in 11 matches, including a stretch of seven victories in a row.

Mohawk will take on Seneca Thursday (Feb. 23) at 1 p.m. in quarter final play. The Sting finished the East Region season with a sparkling 18-2 record, second only to the Algonquin Thunder of Ottawa (19-1).

“Our boys are really looking forward to Thursday’s matchup,” said Mohawk’s head coach, Matt Schnarr. “Seneca will be looking for redemption as we beat them 3-0 in the Bronze medal match last year. This will be a great match up and I expect our leadership of Steve Pawelczyk, Ian Cameron, Ryan delaRosa and Justin Scapinello to step up to the task. We look fresh and eager to get on the court at 1 p.m. Thursday and are excited for a great week.”

The Humber Hawks, the two-time defending champions, open up against last year’s silver medalists, the Redeemer Royals from Ancaster. The Durham Lords play the host Nipissing Lakers and the Sheridan Bruins face Algonquin in the other quarter finals.

The championship runs through Saturday.
