Bailey brings Mac first swimming medal

Montreal – Ontario University Athletics’ Swimmer of the Year, Cameron Bailey, made a splash on the first day of competition at the Canadian Interuniversity Sports championships on Thursday (Feb. 23)j.

The third-year Marauder won a CIS Silver Medal in the 200m freestyle. His time of 1:48.10 was good enough to beat out league rival Frank Despond of the University of Toronto. UBC’s Thomas Gossland took the gold.

Other favourable results for the Marauders in the opening day of competition included a fourth place finish from second-year Konrad Bald. Missing the podium by less than 0.2 seconds, the Marauder finished the 100m breaststoke with a time of 1:01.35.

Matt Vogelzang also had a strong finish for McMaster. The veteran Marauder finished eighth in the A Finals for the 100m fly with a time of 55.42

For the women’s team, Sarah Taylor had the best result of the day. Her time of 29.31 in the 50m backstroke earned her sixth spot in the race.

The last race of the day on Thursday belonged to the 4x100m freestyle. The Marauders men’s team, made up of Bailey, Bald, Matt Vogelzang and Michael MacDonald, took seventh place..
