Bulldogs put the heat on IceCaps for shootout win

MONTREAL – The Hamilton Bulldogs overcame a two-goal deficit and went on to defeat the St. John’s IceCaps, 3-2, in an American Hockey League shootout on Friday (Feb.24).

Playing a “home” game in Montreal and after a scoreless opening period, the Bulldogs were trailing 2-0 early in the third period. Shawn Weller had given the IceCaps a one goal lead at 3:29 of the sandwich frame. Ex-Bulldog Ben Maxwell gave the team from St. John’s a 2-0 lead at 3:14 of the final period.

Brian Willsie started the Bulldogs rebound at 12:56 and, while on a power play, Garrett Stafford knotted the score. Willsie had a hand in that goal, too.

After a scoreless overtime session, the game was decided by a shootout and Hamilton outscored the IceCaps 4-3 with Ian Schultz getting the game-winner.

The game would end in a shootout, with Ian Schultz scoring the winning goal after St. John’s scored on three of their five shots.

The Bulldogs also overtook the IceCaps 24-19 on the shot clock.

A crowd of 11,300 took in the game.

The Bulldogs play the Toronto Marlies on Sunday (Feb. 26) at 5 p.m. at RICOH Coliseum before hosting the Marlies at Copps Coliseum on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
