Mac grapplers have chance to pin down gold

Thunder Bay – Three McMaster wrestlers have a shot at winning a gold medal Saturday (Feb.25) at the Canadian Interuniversity Sports championships.

Jason Buckle, Kevin MacLellan and Sean House advanced to the gold medal matches after opening day wins.

Buckle, a rookie, earned himself a spot in the men’s 57kg division. He will face Steven Schneider of University of Regina.

MacLellan also advanced to the gold medal match of the men’s 82kg division. The veteran will take on Mathieu Deschatelets. MacLellan won a CIS silver last season.

Also advancing to the final for the men’s 90kg division is House. The fifth-year will be up against Landon Squires of Saskatchewan. Last year House beat out Squires in the CIS bronze medal match.

Despite a strong effort, Ryan Blake was bested by Scott Schiller of Concordia University, eliminating him from the gold medal match. Fortunately he rebounded and defeated his next two opponents and landed himself in a bronze medal match with Western’s Sam Hanna. Blake defeated Hanna at the Ontario University Athletics finals.

Sydney Duggan, the only woman representing the Marauders, is out of medal contention, but will compete tomorrow for fifth place in the women’s 55kg.

Rookie Chris Garneau (65kg) also looks to earn himself a strong fifth place showing in his first CIS appearance. Allan Middleton (61kg) and rookie Aaron Misner (130kg) will wrestle tomorrow for seventh in their respective weight classes.
