Seneca boots Redeemer in OCAA men’s volleyball championships

North Bay – The Redeemer Royals volleyball season is over.

In four sets, the Seneca Sting eliminated the Royals from Ontario Colleges Athletic Association men’s volleyball championship play on Friday (Feb. 24).

Match scores were 25-21, 25-20, 25-21, 25-23) in the bronze medal quarter-final game at Nipissing University.

Today’s match saw Seneca control play for much of the first two sets.

In the third set, Redeemer refused to quit, battling back from a 13-8 deficit to build an 18-14 lead and forcing a time out. The Royals would carry their momentum forward, staking a 25-21 win to force a fourth set. The fourth set was marked by long rallies, with both teams making nice plays to keep the score close before Seneca pulled out the win.

Seneca was led by OCAA East Division second team all-star Predrag Gajic, with 20 kills, and OCAA East Division first team all-star Peter Christian, with 20 points on 16 kills, three stuff blocks and one service ace.

Redeemer’s Eric Heidbuurt recorded 15 points on 12 kills and three stuff blocks, while OCAA West Division second team all-star Dave Klomps recorded 11 points on nine kills and two service aces.

Christian was named Seneca’s player of the game. Heidbuurt was named Redeemer’s Player of the Game.

Seneca advances to the bronze medal semifinals on Saturday (Feb. 25) taking on either Nipissing Lakers or Algonquin Thunder.
