Thunder Bay – Two Marauders picked up Gold medals in the final day of competition at the Canadian Interuniversity Sports wrestling championships at Lakehead University.
Kevin MacLellan topped his Silver medal performance last year by winning the 82kg division over Guelph’s Mathieu Deschatelets. The veteran scored in the final four seconds of the second round to win the bout.
Fifth-year Sean House finished off his career as a Marauder with a bang, winning Gold. In the 90kg weight class, the veteran beat out Landon Squires of Saskatchewan to win his first CIS Gold medal. After losing the first round, House came around to pin Squires for a thrilling win.
Rookie Jason Buckle was defeated by Steven Schneider in the 57kg division and returns home with Silver. He also earned himself CIS Rookie of the Year for his performance over the course of the 2011-12 season.
Veteran Ryan Blake also took home some hardware. The fourth-year won a Bronze medal on Saturday (Feb. 25) taking down Western’s Sam Hanna in the 72kg division. Blake was not scored on in two straight rounds and won by over six points.
Rookie Chris Garneau finished fifth at 65kg, beating out Western’s Josh Proctor. Rookie Aaron Misner, at 130kg, won his seventh place match over Regina’s Paul Grebinski and Allan Middleton also finished seventh, taking down Theo Dow of Saskatchewan in the 61kg division.
Representing the women’s team was Sydney Duggan, who finished sixth at the Championships in the 55kg division.
Of the 11 competing teams, the McMaster men placed fifth with 42 points. Concordia took the title with 56 points. Brock’s men’s team was ninth.
The McMaster women’s one-person team placed 12th in the 13-team field which was handily taken by Brock.
