Nyhof knocks down two honours

Kelly Nyhof of Humber is this week’s overall Ontario Colleges Athletic Association female student-athlete for the period ending Sunday, Feb. 26.

Nyhof a third-year middle from Georgetown was named tournament most valuable player at the recent OCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship. In three matches, Nyhof totaled 44 points on 33 kills, 10 blocks and one ace and she was named player of the game in a semi-final win against Nipissing.

Prior to the tournament, Nyhof was named the OCAA women’s volleyball player of the year, an OCAA West region first-team all-star, and an all-Canadian.

Nyhof is also the women’s volleyball player of the week.

The men’s overall award and volleyball player of the week honour goes to Humber’s Derek Quinn.

In basketball, the women’s player of the week is Oakville Sheridan Bruins guard, Michelle Asare.

The third-year player from Brampton was strong down the stretch in a 89-53 sudden death playoff win at Fleming-Peterborough. Asare finished the game with 20 points while contributing six rebounds, three steals and one assist.

She averaged 13.1 points per game during the regular season. With the win, Sheridan advances to the OCAA Women’s Basketball Championship, a tournament in which the Bruins have appeared in the final for four straight seasons.

The men’s basketball award went to Algoma’s Dele Oworu of Winnipeg.
