Dundas Real McCoys begin defence of the John Ross Robertson Cup on Tuesday, March 20 at Whitby against the Dunlops in the Iroquois Sports Complex at 8 p.m.
“This series should be a great test for Allan Cup Hockey. I like being the underdog,” said the Real McCoys general manager, Don Robertson.
“The Dunnies ran away with the league from start to finish. They are the former World Champions (1959), and I’m not sure there is a better run franchise in Canada, but we’ll do our best against them.”
The Real McCoys, finished second in Allan Cup Hockey in 2011-12 with 15 wins, six losses, four overtime losses and three shootout losses while Whitby was first with a record of 21-7 for 42 points. In ACH semi-final play, the Dunlops eliminated Orillia Sunrise Toyota Tundras while the McCoys sidelined the Brantford Blast. Both victors won their best-of-seven series 4-1 in games.
Whitby took the regular season series against Dundas 4-3 in games, however, the four-time defending Robertson Cup champions rallied to win the final three games as part of their eight-game winning streak that ran from Jan. 13 through Feb.17. Included in that run was a portion of Dundas’ eight-game winning streak at home, which began on Dec. 2.
The 12-year-old Real McCoys franchise has won the Ontario Hockey Association Senior AAA title seven times.
The remaining games of the best-of-seven Robertson Cup final are: Game 2 at Dundas on Friday, March 23 at 7:45 p.m.; Game 3 at Whitby on Saturday, March 24 at 6:30 p.m.; Game 4 at Dundas on Monday, March 26 at 7:45 p.m.; and if necessary, Game 5 at Whitby on Wednesday, March 28 at 8 p.m.; Game 6 at Dundas on Friday, March 30 at 7:45 p.m., and Game 7 at Whitby on Sunday, April 1 at 4 p.m.
