Hamilton’s Ife Igwe has found Gold in Collingwood.

Igwe and his Region 3 boys volleyball teammates were gold medal winners at the recent Ontario Winter Games. Igwe, a student at St. Jean de Brebeuf High School, was chosen for the team of players from nine other Ontario centres. Region 3 in the Ontario Volleyball Association takes in Windsor to Oakville to Niagara to the Bruce Peninsula.

After the first two days of round-robin play, Region 3 entered the playoffs in fourth place in the seven-team pack. In semi-final play, Region 3 ousted the defending Winter Games Champions, Region 5 (the GTA), with scores of 26-24, 25-21. Region 3 then took the championships against Region 6 (Ottawa and surrounding area), 21-25, 25-16, 15-11.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, whose son played on the Region 6 squad, was in attendance for the game. The Region 3 players had a photograph taken with the PM.

In addition to volleyball, Igwe also plays soccer at the elite level with Ancaster Titans Under-16 and has earned a Regional Soccer selection. He has previously represented Hamilton and Ontario at the national level for flag football.
