Hammers hoping to nail Rugby League championship

The Hamilton Hammers Rugby League Club is seeking players for the 2012 Canada Rugby League Championship.

Formerly known as the Niagara Bobcats, the Hammers were the 2011 CRL champions.

The 2012 league schedule will have four clubs vying for the title of Canadian champion, and parallel to that, individual players will be vying for places on the 35-man Team Canada Wolverines squad.

Hamilton, as current CRL champions, are early favourites to repeat as title holders but traditional rivals, the Toronto City Saints, have a strong squad and will no doubt want to reverse the result of last years exciting final.

Toronto Centurions will be a much improved squad while the newly formed Ottawa Rhinos are expected to be very competitive.

The playing schedule consists of a six-round regular season starting on Sunday, May 6 followed by a two-round playoffs schedule culminating in the CRL Grand Final on July 15 at Fletcher’s Fields in Markham.

Highlights of all CRL Championship matches will be shown on The Rugby League Show on Sportsnet World and on the Canada Rugby League (CRL) website www.canadarugbyleague.com.

The minimum age for players is 16. Referees (and fans, of course) are also welcome.

The Team Canada Wolverines will also have a busy 2012. The Canada national rugby league team represents Canada in international rugby league football tournaments. The pride of the red and white will be taking on The Royal Air Force and the England Lions, as well as full test matches against Lebanon, Jamaica, and the USA.

Canada’s goal of climbing the international rankings will be attacked head on as the Wolverines will be once again be taking on the world.
