Oakville gymnast wins silver for Spain

OSIJEK, Croatia – Oakville resident Silvia Colussi Pelaez picked up a silver medal on the weekend at a World Cup gymnastics meet.

Pelaez, 16 and who has dual citizenship, was competing for Spain at the meet and won the silver medal in the finals of the Floor event on Sunday (April 29).

Sixteen-year-old Ellie Black of Halifax won the event for her second gold medal in as many days at the meet.

Black, who won the gold on Saturday in the women’s vault, followed up with another impressive performance in Sunday’s floor final, edging Switzerland’s Giulia Steingruber for the title.

With less than three months to go to the 2012 Olympics, the battle is heating up for the six available spots on the Canadian women’s team.

Canada earned a full team berth at the Olympics in women’s gymnastics at the final qualification meet in January. The Olympic team will be announced in June following the 2012 Canadian championships and a final selection meet in Gatineau, Quebec.
