Oakville duo vie for spots on national team

Two Oakville players are going to Canada Basketball’s invitational tryouts for the cadet men’s national team.

The 2012 cadet men’s national team is for Canadian athletes born Jan. 1, 1995 or later. The team will compete in the FIBA U17 World Championship for Men in Lithuania from June 29-July 8. The tryouts will take place at Ryerson University from May 18- 21. In total, 30 players have been asked to attend.

Hoping to land a spot on the national team rosters from Oakville are Jake Babic and Anthony Pate.
Babic is a 6-3 guard who plays for St. Ignatius of Loyola high school.

Pate, also a 6-3 guard, plays for St. Patrick’s high school.

In the FIBA U17 World Championship for Men, Canada was placed in Group B which includes: Argentina, Croatia, Korea, Lithuania and Spain. Canada qualified for this tournament by placing third in the 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Men.

In the first ever FIBA U17 World Championship in 2010, Canada won a bronze medal after beating Lithuania 83-81. The 2010 team included, Anthony Bennett, Kevin Pangos and Andrew Wiggins.
