The Hamilton Cardinals picked up their first win of the Intercounty Baseball League season and did so in front of their home fans, dropping the visiting Burlington Twins 4-1 in one of two games played in the IBL on Friday (May 18).
Matt Martinow earned the win for the Cardinals (1-2), allowing just three hits and one earned run with three walks and five strikeouts over seven innings pitched. After Mike Fortuna pitched the eighth inning, Nino Fasulo wrapped things up in the ninth and earned the save.
Justin Malabanan doubled and drove in two while Chris Piano also doubled and added a run scored for the Cards.
Ryan Noak took the loss for Burlington going four innings while allowing two runs – one earned – on two hits and four walks with three strikeouts.
Jamie Lekas and Kyle Gappa each doubled for the visitors in the loss.
The Cards play next on Sunday (May 20) versus the league leading Barrie Baycats. Game time is 2pm at Bernie Arbour Stadium.
In other IBL action, Brantford Red Sox were 12-5 winners over the London Majors.
