Rookie Cards shine with bats, gloves

The Hamilton Rookieball Cardinals made it to the quarter finals before being eliminated from the Vaughan Vikings Tournament on the weekend (May 19-20).

In round-robin play a strong defensive effort gave the Cards a 2-1 record while they allowed just 12 runs and scored 42. Hamilton lost its opener 9-7 to Waterloo before downing Vaughan, 21-1 and whipping Guelph, 14-2. In the quarter final game, the Cards dropped a 28-22 shootout against Whitby.

During the tourney, Justin DeZoete was 12 for 13 at the plate with a pair of homeruns, two triples and he scored eight runs. Carson Johnson had a 10-for-13 plate effort, including two doubles, a triple, a grand slam home run, and scoring nine times. With a 9-for-13 performance, Matthew Underwood had two doubles, a home run and knocked in 10 runs.

Eric Gillis contributed a double, a triple, and a home run while Joel Palmer was 9 for 13 at the plate with a double while scoring eight runs.

On the defensive side, Justin MacDonald made two outstanding catches on line drives to the outfield during the quarter final game. Underwood turned a nice double play from third to second while Palmer made a line drive catch followed by a quick throw to first to complete a double play. DeZoete made a couple of nice catches in right field and had the best diving effort of the tournament on a fly ball going foul down the right field line.
