MVC 17U Girls cruise to gold undefeated

The Mountain Volleyball Club 17U Girls team won the gold medal at the Canadian Open Championships held in Toronto. Ranked 13th in the 43-team Division 2, the MVC 17U girls went undefeated throughout the tournament.

Hamilton finished first in their opening pool defeating Niagara Rapids, 25-19, 25-18; Edmonton Fury, 25-17, 25-22, and the Prairie Portage Fire, 25-14, 25-6. Re-seeded in the power pools, MVC continued with a win over Montreal College Jean Edudes, 25-21, 21-25, 15-9; Toronto West, 25-20, 25-12, and Oshawa DRVC, 25-15, 25-19.

In the quarter finals, the Hamilton team won 25-14, 25-12 over the North Bay Lakers and repeated against the Winnipeg Vision Wild, 25-18, 16-25, 25-9, in the semifinals. MVC 17U finished undefeated overall with a 25-23, 25-22 win over the Aurora Storm Twister to win the championship match.

MVC 17U team athletes include: Stoney Creek’s Caitlin Genovy and Kirsten Bialachowski; Waterdown’s Brooke Lahaie, Randi Carey, and Leah Feuerstake; Hamilton’s Jessica Klassen, Ina Onat, Kaitlyn Mattiozzi, and Maicee Sorensen; Dundas’ Leah Sharp; Ancaster’s Mary-Kate Alliston; and Grimsby’s Olivia Colling.
