Ticats give Marauder Medeiros a tryout

McMaster All-Canadian guard Jason Medeiros has signed a free agent contract with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.

Medeiros, who was not selected in the CFL draft, will report to the team’s rookie camp on Thursday (May 31) at McMaster’s Ron Joyce Stadium. The team’s full training camp will get underway on June 3 when veterans report.

A Hamilton native and graduate of St. Thomas More high school, Medeiros anchored the Marauder offensive line and earned accolades as an Ontario University Athletics first-team All-Star and second-team Canadian Interuniversity Sports All-Canadian. To earn a chance to play for the team he grew up cheering for, is a dream come true for the Steel City resident.

McMaster Coach Stefan Ptaszek believes Medeiros is very deserving of getting a shot at the pros. “I am so happy that Jay has earned an opportunity at a professional career. I know he will be a positive representative of the McMaster Marauder football program.”

With one season of CIS playing eligibility remaining, Medeiros will take his best shot at advancing to the CFL ranks while retaining the option of playing one more season for the Marauders if he doesn’t catch on with the Ticats.

The Marauders open the 2012 OUA schedule at home on Labour Day, Sept. 3 against the Guelph Gryphons.
