Lytwyn misses bid for Olympic gymnastics

Kevin Lytwyn of Stoney Creek came up short in a spirited attempt to win Canada’s lone spot in men’s gymnastics at the 2012 Games at a World Cup meet on the weekend in Maribor, Slovenia.

In his last chance to earn the Olympic spot, Lytwyn met the qualifying standard with a score of 15.175 in the men’s high bar qualification. But it wasn’t enough to overtake teammate Nathan Gafuik of Calgary who scored 15.300 in the same event just over a week ago at the Canadian championships in Regina.

Lytwyn, who went on to finish fourth in high bar final in Maribor, wasn’t the only Canadian to be eliminated from Olympic contention.

To meet the qualifying standard, contending gymnasts must earn a score on any apparatus that would have earned them a spot in a final at the 2011 world championships. The gymnast with the top score among those who achieve the standard gets to pack his bags for London.
