Verbeek leads Canada into tournament

Canada will be well represented at an international Open tournament this weekend with two-time Olympic medallist Tonya Verbeek of Grimsby and Olympic Champion Carol Huynh headlining the team in Austria.

Martine Dugrenier and Leah Callahan, two wrestlers who qualified to be nominated to the Canadian Olympic Team by winning the trials in December, will also be competing in the event.

Verbeek, competing in the 55kg division, was a silver medal winner in the 2004 Olympics and a bronze medalist in the 2008 Games. She is a multiple-time Canadian champion.

Olympic coach Leigh Vierling is thrilled to see Canada sending a strong line-up to the tournament: “We are excited about this tournament. The event will be a good way for our girls to prepare for the Olympic Games. We had a great showing at the Women’s World Cup last weekend, and we are looking to fine-tune our preparations and operations prior to the Olympic Games.”
