Timpf, Thomas chasing softballs in the Yukon

Two area athletes have been selected to the Canadian national team for the ISF XIII Women’s World Softball Championship.

Carey-Leigh Thomas from Ohsweken and Megan Timpf from Port Dover are on the roster for the tournament at Whitehorse, Yukon, from July 13-22. Sixteen countries are entered in the event and the Canadian team will include 11 players returning from the Bronze medal winning team at the 2010 ISF XII Women’s World Championship in Caracas, Venezuela, as well as five players who competed at the 2011 ISF IX Junior Women’s World Championship, which took place in Cape Town, South Africa last December.

The Hamilton-born Thomas represented Canada at the Junior Women’s World Tournament and as a member of the Brantford Bobcats the short stop/third baseman won the Canadian championship in 2011.

Timpf, an infielder, is a six-year veteran of the national team. Included in her international resume is playing in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Also joining the team of 17 athletes is assistant coach Glenn Boles of St. Catharines.

The Canadian senior women’s team is ranked third in the world behind the United States and Japan.
