Hague trails leader by four strokes

Burlington’s Jenna Hague slipped to second after 14-year-old Brooke Henderson of Smith’s Falls delivered her second consecutive three-under par 69 on Wednesday (July 11) to sit alone in first at the Investors Group Ontario Junior Girls’ Championship.

Henderson started the second round tied with Hague and Orangeville resident Stephanie Tucker after all three carded a 69 in Tuesday’s opening round, tying the female course record at Shelburne Golf and Country Club. Henderson, the defending champion, started off quietly on Wednesday with a bogey on the par-3 third hole before unleashing a torrent of five birdies over her next eight holes. She stumbled with a pair of bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes before hitting her approach shot on 17 to within inches of the pin for her final birdie of the day. The GAO Public Player sits at six under par (69-69-138) heading into Thursday’s third round.

Hague, a member of the Ball State University women’s golf team, carded four birdies on the day against three bogeys and a double on the 16th hole. The Burlington Golf and Country Club member closed out the day with a one-over par 73 for a 36-hole total of 142, four strokes off the lead. Tucker, who represents Brampton Golf Club, carded a five-over 77 to move into third place with 36 holes still left to play.

Team Ontario’s Meghan McDougall of Markham, who will head to the University of Kentucky on a golf scholarship in the fall, delivered the second best performance of the day with a one-under par 71. She moves up the leader board into fourth place, tied with Massey’s Casey MacNeil. Both golfers are tied with a two-day total of 150, six over par.

Following play, the field of 71 athletes was cut to the low 54 and ties, with the cut falling at a total score of 173. Scores of other Golden Horseshoe players included: 18 Alanna Haynes Oakville, Wyldewood G&CC, 155 for 18th place; Lorelle Weavers Burlington, Glendale Golf & CC, and Annika Haynes Oakville, Wyldewood G&CC, 156, tied for 19th; Madison Easterbrook Burlington, Beverly G&CC, 157, tied for 22nd; Kennedy Bodfield, St Catharines, Rockway GC, 159, tied for 27th.
