Toronto’s Albin Choi carded a two-under par 69 Wednesday (July 11) to maintain a single stroke lead over the field at the Investors Group Ontario Amateur Championship hosted by Summit Golf and Country Club in Richmond Hill.
The Beacon Hall Golf Club member carded six birdies against four bogeys on the challenging 6,861-yard layout for a 36-hole total score of 136 (67-69), six-under par. The Team Canada member will have to stay on his game through Friday’s final round to stave off the wealth of talent close at his heels.
Defending Canadian Amateur champion Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas also delivered a second-round 69 to remain in second place at five-under par, while 2010 Ontario Amateur champion Corey Conners of Listowel carded a 68 to move into third place, two strokes off the lead. Three-time Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur champion and 2008 Ontario Amateur champion Dave Bunker of Woodbridge sits in fourth place at two-under.
Three golfers are tied for fifth; Team Canada member Mitch Sutton of London, Mississauga’s Graham Baillargeon and Toronto’s Daniel Kim. Each has a two-day score of 141, one-under par. Recent Ontario Mid-Amateur champion Drew Symons of Woodstock made a run up the leader board after firing a 68 into a tie for eighth place alongside Josh Bamberger of Waterloo, and David Hemstad, who is playing his home course this week.
Other Golden Horseshoe are players still in the running included Oakville’s Brian Churchill-Smith (Toronto Golf Club) has a 143 total and a share of 12th place. Tied in 22nd place with 146s are Michael Lancaster, Ancaster (Hamilton G & CC) and Un Cho, Ancaster, (Hidden Lake GC) while Blair Hamilton, Burlington, (Hidden Lake GC) has a 148 and is tied for 36th place. Sharing 44th place is Georgetown’s Luke Ovenden (The Club at North Halton) while the trio of Robert Ellis, St. Catharines, (St. Catharines G&CC), Paul Lang Ancaster, (Beverly G&CC),and Luke Atack, Hamilton (public player) have 150s and are tied in 51st place.
Not making the cut were Andrew Cardin Milton, (Blue Springs Golf Club); Brad Altenhoff, Burlington (Hidden Lake GC); Sean Bozuk Burlington (Greystone Golf Club); Brent Mcclung, Burlington (Hidden Lake GC); Ryan Delisle, Hamilton (Beverly G&CC); Mike Dinner, Burlington (Eagle Ridge Golf Club); David Crawford, Hamilton (public player); Matt Capern, Oakville (Glencairn Golf Club); Jeffrey Clarke, Milton (Glencairn Golf Club); Scott Banks, Oakville (Blue Springs Golf Club): Stephen Bardswick, Oakville (public player); Dan Hyatt, St. Catharines (St. Catharines G&CC); Brad Currier, Oakville (Trafalgar Golf & Country); Cameron Garon, Dundas (Dundas Valley Golf & Curling).
Following Wednesday’s play, the field of 156 golfers was cut to the low 60 and ties with the cut falling at 151, nine-over par. Sixty-eight competitors will continue on to the final 36-holes of competition with the 2012 champion set to be crowned on Friday.
